Makalu Base Camp Trek will probably be one of the best experiences in your life. Mount Makalu (8,485m) is the fifth highest mountain in the world. The Makalu Base Camp Trek route lies under the Makalu Barun National Park. The route touches the diverse land of two districts i.e., Solukhumbu and Sankhuwasabha. The majority ethnic groups are Sherpa, Rai and Gurung.

Tourists can view the diverse ecosystem and wildlife of 421 bird species, 315 types of butterflies and other 88 animal species which consist of endangered animals like Red panda and Musk deer. Trekkers can also see the Kade Vyakur bird which can only be found in Nepal. During the trek you can see the nose touching view of Mt. Makalu. You can also see Mt. Chamling(7,319m), Mt. Barunche(7,129m), Mt. Mirapic(6,654m) and many other mountain ranges. You can also experience the view of Mt. Everest and Mt. Kanchenjunga from a different angle.
Best season-Makalu Base Camp Trek
The best time for Makalu Base Camp Trek is between September to November and March to May, during this period trails are covered with easy snow. You can also trek in August which is a late monsoon when you can see all the new growing vegetation along with many waterfalls on trails. Make sure of your safety.
Makalu Base Camp Trek trails lie under the Conservation areas so an individual has to pay 300 NPR/30 USD.
From Tumlingtar you have to travel for 1 and half hour to reach Deurali. After having lunch at Deurali again you have to travel for around 1 hour to reach NumBazar where you will be staying overnight. The numbazar is very beautiful, located between the green hills and peaceful environment. You take enough rest for further travel otherdays.
After grabbing breakfast at Numbazar you have to travel for 4 hours to reach Seduwa. You can have lunch at Seduwa and again you have to travel for another 4 hours to reach TassiGau where you will be staying overnight. TassiGau is the last human civilization village during the trek trail.
Your trek starts from today. After having Breakfast at TassiGau, you have to trek for 3-4 hours to reach DandaKharka(2900m). You will be having lunch at Dandakharka and again trek for 4 hours climbing rocky steps to reach Khongma where you will be staying overnight. During the trail you can see beautiful hills. There are 3 hotels and 1 porter shelter in Khongma.The next morning view will try to make you never leave the place.
Today’s trail is probably the interesting trail of the trek. You have to climb for 4 hours to reach Thulo Danda (4,300m). On the way to Thulo Danda you have to trek through Tallo Deurali, Mathillo Deurali and Sano Pokhari. You can see beautiful views of snow-capped mountains. Sano Pokhari is mostly visited by Kirati people to worship it. You will grab your launch at Thulo Danda (1 hotel/lodge) and you have to trek downhill to Dobate for 3 hours where you will be staying overnight.
While trekking downhill from Thulo Danda you have to trek through Thulo Pokhari (4,200m) which is mostly worshipped by buddhist. You can also see the big stone naturally carved like an elephant's face here. There is only one hotel in Dobate and one Porter shelter.
After grabbing breakfast at Dobate, you have to trek downhill for 2 hours and walk through Barun river bank for 1 hour and the landslide trail will begin and after again have to trek for 4 hours straight trail to reach Yangle. From Yangle you can see the holy Shiva Dhara. The place here will make you feel like you are in a different beautiful new world. You will be staying overnight at Yangle. There are 2 hotels and 3 porter shelter at Yangle.
Today you will visit the holy Shiva Dhara which is a mystery to science to find the origin of water from the rock. The trail is a bit rough and difficult. You have to be very careful. In the huge rock you can see Lord Shiva in the right, Buddha in Middle and goddess Parvati in Left. It is believed that the flowing Shiva Dhara doesn't pour upon the sinner and the water turns towards the holy person. It takes four hours to reach Shiva Dhara and after a visit you have to return to Yangle for a night stay.
After having breakfast at Yangle, you have to trek through the bank of Barun river for 2 hours and then you reach Barun Valley. Signs for the correct trail are made on the stone by painting yellow in big stones. Then you have to trek uphill for 4 hours to reach Langele where you will be staying overnight. You can see big waterfalls on the trail flowing through the mountains in China. There are 3 hotels in Langele.
You can take rest to remove the physical tiredness and roam around the beautiful environment of Langele. You can know about the culture and tradition followed here. You will get time to hear the songs from locals they sing there.
After the 1 hour of uphill climb from Langele, you have to walk through the bank of Barun river on a straight trail. The flowing river is the head of Barun river beside the river there is a huge and long lake named Lamo Pokhari. You can see many glaciers in the lake. After walking 1 and half hours through the side of the lake and Barun river you will see and reach on plain land from where you can see giant Mt. Makalu. Small lakes beside the trail tell you that the basecamp is near.
From the plain land you again have to trek uphill for 1 hour you can see basecamp. There are 2 hotels and 2 porter shelters in Makalu Base Camp. The morning view will definitely take your breath away, you can see the world’s fifth largest mount Makalu right close to your nose. You can also see the lake right below Mount Makalu which is as white as milk so it is called DudhPokhari. This lake is also considered as the origin of Barun river.
While returning from TassiGau, if you will be able to find the vehicle you can ride towards Seduwa for 4 hours and again from Seduwa if you find a vehicle you can travel for another 3 hours and reach Numbazar. I believe you can find local jeeps. If not you can trek to Seduwa, stay overnight there and again trek to Numbazar the next day.
